Summary

SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:

WHEREAS, the Divine 9 of Toledo is made up of college-educated women and men who are members of nine Black sororities and fraternities, and are committed to “community awareness and action through educational, economic, and cultural service activities”; and

 

WHEREAS, the Divine 9 of Toledo consists of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity (1906), Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (1908), Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity (1911), Omega Psi Phi Fraternity (1911), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (1913), Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity (1914), Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority (1922), Zeta Phi Beta Sorority (1920); Iota Phi Theta Fraternity (1963), and

 

WHEREAS, Divine 9 sororities and fraternities began to work together to create social programs that would bring about the social change that their members wanted to see for themselves, for their peers, for Blacks across the nation, and for the nation itself; and

 

WHEREAS, these historically African American Greek-lettered organizations demonstrated their vital role in promoting policy reform and community upliftment, continuing a legacy of service and leadership that impacts society locally and globally; and

 

WHEREAS, each organization, with its unique heritage and mission, contributes to a larger tapestry of service and advocacy, working together to address issues of mutual interest and concern; and

 

WHEREAS, today, members of the Divine 9 continue a legacy of breaking barriers and overcoming obstacles in the service of social change; and

 

WHEREAS, Toledo’s Divine 9 has provided mentoring, scholarships, community services and giving to programs that benefit and uplift our community.

 

Body

NOW THEREFORE, Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo, Ohio:

 

SECTION 1. That the Divine 9 of the City of Toledo, made up of college-educated women and men who are members of nine Black sororities and fraternities, are recognized for their contributions to the promotion of social change, civic engagement and community service.

 

SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
