Body
SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:
Solids handling is critical at the City of Toledo Department of Public Utilities Division of Water Reclamation Bayview Water Reclamation Facility. A critical part of the treatment to protect the environment from potential pollution by sanitary sewage is the removal of biosolids created by treatment processes at the facility. The removal process often causes a mineral scale, primarily formed of magnesium, known as struvite or vivianite, to build up on the walls of process piping. Over time, the buildup of scale reduces the effective diameter of piping in the solids handling process. Recently, the diameter was reduced to a critical point at which the facility was no longer able to process the solids and as quickly as they were being created, thus backing up the solids handling facility. The initial plan to correct this was to replace all the effected lines with new pipe to restore capacity. Kokosing Mosser Joint Venture advised their estimates to perform this work was approaching $750,000. Alternate methods were investigated and successfully implemented in a collaborative approach to address the problem. Methods used included chemical treatment to dissolve the pipe deposits and implementation of more advanced pipe cleaning methods including techniques using chain flails and jet rodding.

Summary
