Establishing Black Girl Dad Week in the City of Toledo.
Summary
WHEREAS, research demonstrates that strong father-daughter relationships lead to happier and healthier women and the presence of supportive fathers in a daughter’s life can have a huge impact on a girl’s self-esteem, academic and career success, and relationships; and
WHEREAS, Black adults, specifically Black men are more likely to be affected by issues surrounding mental health and are less likely to seek treatment due to lack of access and the negative stigma surrounding mental health concerns; and
WHEREAS, research shows that raising a daughter can change father’s behaviors, change a father’s attitudes and even help fathers live longer; and
WHEREAS, Black Americans have a wholly different experience than white Americans and focusing on the relationships between fathers and daughters can have a profound impact on moving the lives of Black families in a positive direction; and
WHEREAS, Black Girl Dad Week focuses on topics like careers, education, politics, community, healing, family fun, and relationships, to provide a space for conversation and healing in the realm of father daughter relationships; and
WHEREAS, building on the success of Black Girl Dad Week sponsored by Male Behavioral Health and Columbus Urban League, the City of Toledo wants to highlight the importance of the father daughter relationship for the importance of the community; and
WHEREAS, the more focus there is on building strong, positive, supporting relationships for Black women and girls, the stronger our society becomes; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That we designate the third week of February as Black Girl Dad Week.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
