Toledo City Council committing to work with community-based efforts to reduce gun violence in the City of Toledo; and declaring an emergency.

Summary
WHEREAS, Toledo City Council is committed to dedicating resources to create safe neighborhoods where residents and businesses can thrive; and

WHEREAS, like many places across the country, Toledo has experienced a spike in gun violence in the last three years; and

WHEREAS, we recognize that Toledo has never been bound by negative statistics; as a City we are resilient in the face of our challenges; and

WHEREAS, Toledo City Council recognizes the importance of this issue; NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1. That Toledo City Council commits to engaging with diverse organizations who are actively transforming neighborhoods.

SECTION 2. That as part of a larger public safety strategy to reduce gun violence, Toledo City Council continues to support the efforts of law enforcement by encouraging proactive community policing, to uplift and strengthen community-based efforts including but not limited to neighborhood block watch and associations, mentorship programs, and youth programming.

SECTION 3. That Toledo City Council resolves to be active in our community in helping to restore public confidence and to take concrete steps to make Toledo a safer city for all people.

SECTION 4. That this Resolution is declared to be an emergency measure necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, safety and property of the City, and for the further reason that this Resolution is required to be immediately effective in order restore the feeling of safety in the City; wherefore, this Resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon its adoption or at the earliest time allowed by law.
