Title
Recognizing Central Catholic Fighting Irish Football Division II State Champions.
Summary
WHEREAS, the 2022-2023, Central Catholic Fighting Irish Football team earned the Division II State Title against Akron Archbishop Hoban High School in Canton on Thursday, December 1, 2022; and
WHEREAS, this is the fourth state title earned by the Fighting Irish Football team since Coach Greg Dempsey took the reins in 2000; Coach Dempsey was a 1990 graduate of CCHS, and has record of 238-52 as a coach; Dempsey was not the first choice when he was hired in 2000 but has come to be known as one of the best coaches in Ohio High School Football history; and
WHEREAS, at the start of the 2022 football season Central Catholic Fighting Irish was ranked first in the Three Rivers Conference and ended the season winning the Division II State Championship; and
WHEREAS, the team was led by captains Braden Awls, Ty'Waun Clark, Cody Schuberg and Braiden Vargas; Ty'Waun Clark ran fifteen times for 77 yards and two touchdowns and passed for another 62 yards and a score and Braden Awls intercepted the ball for a 92-yard run for a touchdown; and
WHEREAS, the Central Catholic Fighting Irish Football Team has been one to watch for a number of years in the Northwest and Greater Ohio area; beginning in 2005, the team has won three D-II and one D-III championships; Coach Dempsey credits the coaching staff and hardworking teams for the success of the program over the last twenty-three years; NOW THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That we recognize the hours of practice and dedication that the student athletes and coaches have committed to the state title and wish the Fighting Irish Football Team continued support, pride, and success in the future.
