Title
Urging Toledo City Council and the City of Toledo to re-establish Block Watch Community Program and work together to fight Gun Violence in the City of Toledo; and declaring an emergency.
Summary
WHEREAS, Toledo has seen an increase in Gun Violence with 59 homicides since January and 6 within a 7-day period; and
WHEREAS, out of the 100 most populous cities in the United States, Toledo ranks in the top 20 and is on par with the crime rate of Houston, Chicago and Baton Rouge; and
WHEREAS, travel websites such as Van Life Wanderer and others cite Toledo as an unsafe City to visit; and
WHEREAS, statistically the crime rate in Toledo is at least 3 times higher than the National Average; and
WHEREAS, the Wall Street Journal listed Toledo #15 in the list of the Top 25 Most Dangerous Cities in America; and
WHEREAS, the Toledo City Council recognizes the importance of this issue; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That Toledo City Council commits to engage with vital organizations such as the Coalition for Peaceful Neighborhoods, and other diverse community organizations, continue to support our Police and encourage proactive Community Policing, encourage the reestablishment of the Community Block Watch program, and support hands on education for parents of Toledo's children and encourage increased mentoring for at risk students, as well as increase youth programming.
SECTION 2. That Toledo City Council resolves to be active in our Community in helping to restore public confidence and to take concrete steps to make Toledo a safer City for all people.
SECTION 3. That this Resolution is declared to be an emergency measure necessary for the immediate return of safety and trust to the citizens of Toledo from Gun Violence. This resolution shall be in full force and effect from and immediately after its adoption,...
