Title
Designating Henry Clark Way.

Summary
WHEREAS, at a young age, Henry L. Clark, along with his sister, moved to Toledo to be with their father; and

WHEREAS, Henry graduated in 1952, from Macomber Vocational High School; after graduation, he went into the Air Force in 1953, serving four years; and

WHEREAS, in 1959, Henry graduated from Andrew Columbus Barber College; he continued his education later on at a beauty school and graduated May, 1965; and

WHEREAS, learning how to cut different hair textures on the job, Henry chose to open his own barbershop in 1961, then called "Poor Clark's"; a cheeky title chosen to reference not his childhood poverty in Mississippi, but his present-day success; and

WHEREAS, in 1971, Henry moved his barbershop to 1723 North Detroit Ave., renaming it "Clark's Barber & Beauty Shop"; and

WHEREAS, Henry actively participated in The Adopt a Haircut Program which started in August 2007; the program is in partnership with Mount Nebo Baptist Church, and the Mott Branch Library of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library that allows for boys kindergarten through 12th grade to bring a book with them to the shop on Mondays or Tuesdays, to read for a free haircut; and

WHEREAS, Clark's Barber & Beauty Shop has become, and will remain, a community staple; NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1. That this Council does hereby designate the corner of North Detroit Ave. at Lincoln Ave. and the remainder of Lincoln Ave, west of North Detroit Ave. to Smead Ave. as "Henry Clark Way".

SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
