Urging Governor Mike DeWine to overrule ODOT and support and force action for a better access route to Columbus via 23; and declaring an emergency.
Summary
WHEREAS, TMACOG has provided $250,000 towards studying better access from the north to Columbus, and the state has sponsored similar projects of scope and costs to solve congestion;" and
WHEREAS, Northwest Ohio drivers are required to pass through 38 stop lights from Waldo to I-270, while those from Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Dayton, Cincinnati and Youngstown encounter zero stop lights to Columbus, and Toledo should not be the only major Ohio city without a highway to the State Capital; and
WHEREAS, Toledo, is growing with new business and has been named number one in the nation among mid-sized cities for new business investment in Site Selection Magazine; and
WHEREAS, Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission expects to add over 1 million jobs and households in the next 20 years, and ODOT itself expects truck traffic to double by 2050; and
WHEREAS, with Central Ohio growing as well as the Toledo area as a logistics and freight Hub and the connection to the Southeast United States growing due to expansion of the interstate 73/74/75 corridor with an expanded bridge to Canada, opening in 2024, this will allow for increased international trade; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That the Council hereby strongly urges Ohio State Governor Mike DeWine to overturn the ODOT recommendation, and treat Toledo with the respect it deserves and force ODOT to reconsider and give immediate attention to the 23 highway direct route from Toledo to Columbus.
SECTION 2. That the Toledo City Council is hereby directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.
