Showing solidarity and support for Ukraine.

 

Summary

WHEREAS, on Thursday, February 24, 2022, Ukraine was invaded by Russia in the largest military operation in Europe since World War II; the invasion was the latest aggression from Russia that started during the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and proliferated during their simultaneous invasion of the Eastern provinces of Ukraine in the Donbas region; and

 

WHEREAS, Ukraine gained their independence on August 24, 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union; the people of Ukraine have been fighting to gain and keep their independence from Russia starting in the beginning of the 20th century with the Ukrainian War of Independence which lasted from 1917 to 1921. The sovereignty of Ukraine has been in conflict throughout the 20th and the early part of the 21st century, and

 

WHEREAS, while this latest attack and invasion of Ukraine has shown the world the devastating effects of war and resulting humanitarian crisis; there has been an outpouring of support internationally for the Ukrainian people and the heroes of the conflict including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy who is quoted as saying “I need ammunition, not a ride” as well as the newly established folk hero “The Ghost of Kyiv” also including all the men and women who have stayed to fight for their country and those who have fled to keep their children and families safe; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

 

SECTION 1.  That Toledo City Council does hereby support the people of Ukraine who are fighting for their continued independence and those who stand in solidarity to stop Russian aggression, but also those who continue to pray for Ukrainians safe return home and reunification with their loved ones.

 

                     SECTION 2.  That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
