Title
Recognizing March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
Summary
WHEREAS, over six million Americans are considered developmentally disabled, including impairments in learning and behavior, such as autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and impairments in physical and/or intellectual functioning such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and Down syndrome; and
WHEREAS, this year marks the 35th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s 1987 proclamation designating March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, in part, this proclamation stated, “I invite all individuals, agencies, and organizations concerned with the problem of developmental disabilities to observe this month with appropriate observances and activities directed toward increasing public awareness of the needs and the potential of Americans with developmental disabilities. I urge all Americans to join me in according to our fellow citizens with such disabilities both encouragement and the opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential;” NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That March be recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to raise awareness of the needs and potential of these individuals, and to encourage inclusion and opportunities, and to celebrate their contributions to the community.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
