Urging Toledo Schools (Public and Private) to encourage the practice of Secure Firearm Storage to further prevent firearm violence and gun theft.
Summary
WHEREAS, an estimated 5.4 million American children live in households with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm; and
WHEREAS, every year, roughly 350 youth unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else; and
WHEREAS, research shows that secure firearm storage reduces unintentional firearm injuries among youth by 85 percent; and
WHEREAS, in incidents of gun violence on school grounds, 75 percent of active shooters are current students or recent graduates, and three out of four school shooters under the age of 18 obtained their guns from their own home, a relative's home, or from friends; and
WHEREAS, keeping students and school staff safe from firearm violence is a responsibility of the school board; and
WHEREAS, school districts have begun to inform parents and guardians of applicable secure firearm storage practices; and
WHEREAS, secure firearm storage is a responsibility as a firearm owner to the safety of citizens, with emphasis on students and school staff, from firearm violence; and
WHEREAS, over 160 firearms were stolen from vehicles in the city of Toledo in 2021; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That Toledo City Council supports and requests that schools, Public and Private schools in the area practice the safe storage of firearms and promote responsible ownership practices, protecting students and their families, staff and others from serious injury.
SECTION 2. That Toledo City Council encourages and requests the Superintendents to create an appropriate letter, in English and Spanish, to parents and guardians that explains the importance of secure gun storage to protect minors from accessing irresponsibly stored guns, to be included in ann...
