Council President Cherry

Recognizing January as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month.

WHEREAS, cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service and is the most under-recognized threat to the health and safety of our fire fighters; and

WHEREAS, the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network has designated January as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month to provide the necessary tools and guidance to develop life-saving protocols for cancer prevention and to support those with a cancer diagnosis within their departments; and

WHEREAS, increased public awareness of fire fighter cancer due to occupational exposure to carcinogens will help generate greater support for localities to establish protocols for regular cancer screenings, behavioral health treatment for illness related depression, modernization of stations, gear and apparatus, and prevention education for current and former fire fighters; NOW, THEREFORE

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1.  That January be recognized as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness of fire fighter cancer and encourage prevention through exposure reduction, cancer screening and education.

SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.

Adopted:  January 18, 2022:  yeas 9, nays 0.
