Recognizing the 30th Anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act.

 

Summary

WHEREAS, we, Toledo City Council, recognize and honor the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), of 1990; the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas of public life including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public; and

WHEREAS, in 2008, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) was signed into law and became effective on January 1, 2009; the ADAAA made a number of significant changes to the definition of “disability”; the changes in the definition of disability in the ADAAA apply to all titles of the ADA; and

WHEREAS, the ADA consists of five titles (or sections) that relate to different areas of public life: Title I - Employment; Title II - Public Services: State and Local Government; Title III - Public Accommodations and Services Operated by Private Entities; Title IV - Telecommunications; Title V - Miscellaneous Provisions; and

WHEREAS, on October 25, 2016, the Toledo/Lucas County Commission on Disabilities was created as a joint commission which shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Mayor, City Council and the Board of Lucas County Commissioners on issues relating to the needs, problems and other concerns of people with disabilities; an emphasis for appointments to the Lucas County Commission on Disabilities shall be on appointing individuals with disabilities and/or immediate family members of individuals with disabilities; and

 

WHEREAS, the duties and powers of the Toledo/Lucas County Commission on Disabilities shall be set forth as provided by by-laws enacted by the Commission and shall include: advise the Mayor, Lucas County Board of Commissioners and members of the Toledo City Council on how to assist people with disabilities to receive services, other assistance, and opportunities they need to achieve their maximum potential through increased independence, productivity, and integration into the community through collaboration, representation, liaison/advisor, activities and programs;  NOW, THEREFORE,

 

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

 

SECTION 1.  That Toledo City Council recognizes the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.

 

SECTION 2.  That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
