Title

Recognizing the valor and ultimate sacrifice of Toledo Police Officer Anthony Dia; confirming the City’s commitment to Jayme Dia, widow of Officer Dia, and their children; and declaring an emergency.

Body

SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:

On July 4, 2020, Toledo Police Officer Anthony Dia was fatally wounded in the line of duty.  Officer Dia is survived by his wife, Jayme Dia, and their two young children.  In recognition of his bravery and ultimate sacrifice, the City of Toledo wishes to collectively acknowledge its debt and affirm its commitment to the health and well-being of Officer Dia’s wife and children.

To that end, the City of Toledo wishes to ensure that full health insurance benefits continue to be paid, uninterrupted, on behalf of Officer Dia’s wife and children until such time as other medical benefits to which the Dia family is entitled become available, or until the children reach adulthood.

Summary

NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1.  That the Council of the City of Toledo recognizes the valor and ultimate sacrifice of Police Officer Anthony Dia and wishes to show support for Officer Dia’s family.

SECTION 2.  That the Council of the City of Toledo affirms and commits to the promise by the Mayor of the City of Toledo that medical benefits shall continue uninterrupted for Officer Dia’s widow, Jayme Dia, and their two children, subject to the rules and procedures of the City’s health plan, until such time as other health care benefits become available to all or each of them, or until their youngest child turns the age of 18, whichever occurs first.

SECTION 3.  That the Clerk of Council hereby is authorized and directed to forward an official copy of this resolution to Jayme Dia.

SECTION 4.  That this resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency and shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption.  The reason for the emergency lies in the fact that this is a matter that should be considered immediately so that the commitments of the City of Toledo can be memorialized with no further delay.
