Taking a stand against the increase in racist attacks and discrimination towards Chinese and Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities during the coronavirus pandemic, and declaring an emergency.
Summary
WHEREAS, there has been rise in anti-Chinese and anti-Asian violence and stigma with the rapidly evolving coronavirus crisis; and
WHEREAS, racist rhetoric and violence has spread unchecked, making our communities less safe and undermining our collective efforts to address this coronavirus pandemic; and
WHEREAS, Toledo City Council desires to partner closely with Ohio AAPI community leaders and the 350,000+ Ohioans who have Chinese, Asian, or Pacific Islander heritage to take tangible steps to fight against COVID-19 related racism; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That Toledo City Council denounces racism and discrimination against people of Chinese, Asian, and Pacific Islander descent that has been occurring during the coronavirus pandemic.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution is declared to be an emergency measure and shall take effect and be enforced from and after its adoption. The reason for the emergency lies in the fact that this Resolution is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, safety and property and for the further reason that the immediate action is necessary in order put a stop to the racist rhetoric and violence during the coronavirus pandemic.
