Title

Recognizing Mercy Health - St. Vincent Medical Center for its financial generosity and its commitment to working as partners with Toledo’s safety forces.

Summary

WHEREAS, for the last twenty years, we have lived with the reality of school shootings. Students go to class every day with the very real fear that someone may shoot them while they are at school. In 2019 alone, there were at least 130 incidents of gunfire on school grounds in the United States, resulting in thirty-two deaths and seventy-seven injuries; and

WHEREAS, there were forty-five school shootings in the U.S. in first forty-six weeks of 2019, almost one shooting per week. One of those shootings occurred in Toledo on August 30, 2019, when a sixteen-year-old was shot after a football game at Central Catholic High School; and

WHEREAS, in response to the gun violence occurring in schools across the country, the Toledo Police Department, whose mission is to protect the lives of Toledo’s citizens, decided to conduct a full-scale active shooter training exercise at a local high school; and

WHEREAS, realizing the need for such training in our community, Mercy Health - St. Vincent Medical Center volunteered to fund all overtime costs related to the planning and implementation of the exercise for the Toledo Police Department and Toledo Fire and Rescue Department; NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1.  That Mercy Health - St. Vincent Medical Center is hereby commended for its financial generosity and its commitment to working as partners with Toledo’s safety forces to protect the residents of our community.

SECTION 2.  That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
