Recognizing September as National Recovery Month.

 

Summary

WHEREAS, National Recovery Month began in 1989 as “Treatment Works Month” to honor the work of substance use treatment professionals in the field that make recovery possible and it has since evolved over the last three decades to include celebrating the accomplishments of individuals in recovery from substance abuse disorders as well as mental illness; and

 

WHEREAS, now in its 30th year “Recovery Month” acknowledges the gains made by those in recovery, works to promote new evidence-based treatment & recovery practices, emphasizes the need to share resources and build networks across the country and recognizes the tens of thousands of prevention facilities, treatment services and recovery programs throughout the country in their mission to increase awareness while furthering a greater understanding about the diseases of mental and substance use disorders; and

 

WHEREAS, Recovery Month highlights the achievements of individuals who have reclaimed their lives through recovery while also encouraging citizens to take action to help expand and improve the availability of effective prevention, treatment and recovery services for those in need; and

 

WHEREAS, this year, with the theme of “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger”, Recovery Month focuses on community members, first responders, the healthcare community, youth and emerging leaders and highlights the over thirty organizations that support recovery within our community; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

 

SECTION 1. That National Recovery Month is recognized as a valuable way to inspire millions of people to raise awareness about mental and substance use disorders, share their stories of recovery, and encourage others who are still in need of services and support.

 

SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
