Title

Designating Michigan St. from Madison to Adams as Clyde Scoles Way.

 

Summary

WHEREAS, Clyde Scoles was the long time Toledo-Lucas County Public Library Director and widely known as a leader, innovator and true public servant; and

 

WHEREAS, Clyde Scoles died in February, four months from retirement and just weeks after announcing it; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Scoles was a native of Columbus, a 1971 graduate of The Ohio State University and had a master of library science degree from the University of Michigan; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Scoles began his career as a page with the Public Library of Columbus and Franklin County and in 1974 was named director of the library system in Zanesville, Ohio; and

 

WHEREAS, Clyde Scoles arrived in Toledo in 1978 as assistant director of the library and has been library director since 1985; and

 

WHEREAS, Clyde Scoles is credited with the $45 million expansion of the Main Library in 2001, building or remodeling new branches, including the latest addition of the Mott Branch Library now under way and a new $10.5 million upgrading of the Main Library, which should be completed by Labor Day; and

 

WHEREAS, Clyde Scoles was the architect of our truly modern library system that is the envy of most mid-size cities and many larger ones in America; and

 

WHEREAS, our library system includes a vast range of services from electronic and audio books to innovative and creatives uses of the Internet; and

 

WHEREAS, Clyde Scoles was recognized in 2016 by the Ohio Library Council as a “Hall of Fame Librarian” and held leadership roles at the Ohio Legislative Reference Bureau, the American Library Association, OHIONET Inc., and the Ohio Library Council; and

 

WHEREAS, Clyde Scoles was known for his compassion, staunchly defending library funding in Ohio and foresight into the future role of libraries; and

 

WHEREAS, Clyde is survived by his wife, Diane, and four children; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

 

 

SECTION 1.  That in honor of the late Clyde Scoles, Michigan St. from Madison to Adams, be designated as Clyde Scoles Way.

 

SECTION 2.  That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
