Condemning the Anti-Muslim terrorist attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand and showing support for the Muslim community in the Northwest Ohio area.
Summary
WHEREAS, news of the terrorist attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand on March 15, 2019 killing fifty people shocked and saddened members of Toledo City Council and the citizens of Toledo; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Toledo stands in solidarity with our local Muslim community, who after the attacks held two vigils with several hundred attending in support; and
WHEREAS, in this time of uncertainty and polarization in our country and throughout the world, where white nationalism is on the rise and many feel emboldened to use hate-speech and violence to intimidate people who they feel are different than them; and
WHEREAS, now more than ever, we must come together as a community and stand against oppression and violence and show the world that we are a community of inclusion and love and that we support our Muslim brothers and sisters; and
WHEREAS, we will act as allies to those who others look to exclude and that we continue to build bridges between communities and stand up to hate in the world; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That we condemn the senseless violence of the anti-Muslim terrorist attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand that killed fifty and injured dozens more and that the City of Toledo continue to be an inclusive and welcoming community to all our citizens.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
