Recognizing Rogers High School Girls Basketball Team, State Champions - again.
Summary
WHEREAS, on Saturday, March 16, the Rogers High School girls basketball team beat No. 1 Dayton Carroll 56 - 45 for the 2019 Division II State of Ohio Championship, the first of any Toledo team, girls or boys, to repeat as state champions; and
WHEREAS, the championship game was led by All-Ohio sophomore guard Madison Royal-Davis (17 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists), All-American senior guard Zia Cooke (13 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists), senior post player Tanaziah Hines (8 points, 7 rebounds), junior guard Kearrah Peace (9 points), sophomore Cortney Gardner (5 points), and sophomore Logen Love (4 points), to end the season with a 20-game winning streak to finish 27-2; and
WHEREAS, a crowd of 3,139 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus witnessed the championship game; and
WHEREAS, Coach Lamar Smith reached a milestone with his 200th win (200-46 in nine seasons, eight consecutive City League titles) after guiding Rogers to the state final four for the fourth time in the past six years; and
WHEREAS, All-American and D-II state player of the year Zia Cooke closed her career with 2,197 points, 104 career points in her 4 final four games, is headed to the University of South Carolina in the fall; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That the players, coaches and Toledo Public Schools are hereby applauded and recognized for their extraordinary contribution to the history of the City of Toledo as the 2019 Division II Basketball Champions for the State of Ohio.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
