Urging President Trump and Congress to find an immediate solution and agreement to end the Federal shutdown.
Summary
WHEREAS, approximately 42 million Americans benefited from the (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) SNAP program in 2017; and
WHEREAS, about 70% of those households include children and almost 1/3 benefit seniors or adults with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, SNAP automatically renews, it still must be funded by Congress annually and so far has been funded for the month of January; and
WHEREAS, there is uncertainty and confusion as to the coverage of SNAP benefits beyond January, it could result in the loss of nutritional foods being available and serious health consequences for recipients; and
WHEREAS, other federal programs are also in jeopardy and causing an extreme burden on our local economy; and
WHEREAS, Federal Government must work together, it is requested that President Trump and Congress work together to pass the funding bills required to assure that our constituents continue to receive their food benefits while other issues are worked through; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That the City of Toledo asks President Trump and Congress to find an immediate solution and agreement to end the Federal shutdown.
SECTION 2. That it is ordered and directed that, once adopted, the Clerk of Council shall send a copy of this Resolution to all representatives of Congress (House and Senate) and State Representatives that represent the citizens of Toledo.
SECTION 3. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after the earliest date allowed by law.
