Recognizing and congratulating Carmen Rodriguez Barbosa 2017 recipient of the Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan Award.
Summary
WHEREAS, Carmen was born in Texas after her parents emigrated from Mexico as migrant farmworkers. The family moved north to Elmore, Ohio to seek a better life; and
WHEREAS, Carmen moved to Toledo in second grade, attending Waite High School and Owens Community College. She retired as a salesperson and supervisor from McNaughton McKay/Kiemle Hankins; and
WHEREAS, Carmen's career in community service and volunteerism is wide-ranging and lengthy. Carmen is a past secretary of the Ohio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (OHCC) and secretary of the Ohio Hispanic Republican Assembly (OHRA), which helped Hispanics learn about the Republican Party and its political platform in Ohio; and
WHEREAS, Carmen is a past pastoral council member at Little Flower Church and currently serves as vice president of its Altar Rosary Society and as a Eucharistic Minister; and
WHEREAS, Carmen is also a founding member of the Spanish-American Organization (SAO), which helps Hispanics through scholarships and education. She is currently the SAO secretary and has served as President; and
WHEREAS, Carmen has co-chaired Midwest LatinoFest and organizes Latino Heritage Night at a Mud Hens game each summer. Carmen Rodriguez- Barbosa is married to Ricardo Barbosa, is the mother of two adult children and has three grandchildren. Carmen also spends her spare time volunteering at Swanton Health Care and is a long-term member of Latins United social club. Carmen enjoys working and helping people; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That the Council of the City of Toledo hereby recognizes and congratulates Carmen Barbosa, the 2017 recipient of the Distinguished Hispanic Ohioans Award. Council further recognizes Carmen for her tireless effort...
