Recognizing the Let Noor Run initiative, founded by NoorAlexandria Abukaram with the aim of fighting all forms of discrimination in sports, including the personal struggle of Ms. NoorAlexandria Abukaram with religious discrimination.
Summary
WHEREAS, on October 19th of 2019, a young Muslim woman, NoorAlexandria Abukaram was disqualified from a cross country meet for wearing the hijab; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Abukaram started the Let Noor Run initiative, she hoped to offer a platform that invited athletes to speak up on the issues they're facing, and offer different forms of support that would allow them to continue to do what they love; and
WHEREAS, the Let Noor Run initiative strives to end discrimination in sports; and
WHEREAS, the first event of the Let Noor Run initiative held in January of 2020, emulated this mission beautifully, by merging perspectives and discussing ways of preventing other athletes from going through similar struggles; and
WHEREAS, two world renowned athletes were invited to inspire the youth of Toledo, and with only a timeline, the organizers were able to gather a crowd of over 130 supporters, and the number has only grown over time; and
WHEREAS, the Let Noor Run initiative hopes to continue having events like this for the youth of many communities across the country to further fight all forms of discrimination in sports, including the personal struggle of Ms. NoorAlexandria Abukaram with religious discrimination; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That Toledo City Council encourages Toledoans to support the Let Noor Run initiative with its goal of fighting all forms of discrimination in sports, including the personal struggle of Ms. NoorAlexandria Abukaram with religious discrimination.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after the earliest date allowed by law.
