Title
Adopting the new, official flag of the City of Toledo and celebrating the City's 188th Birthday.
Summary
SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:
WHEREAS, the City of Toledo's current flag is outdated and does not adequately reflect the vibrancy, enthusiasm, and progress of our great city; and
WHEREAS, in 2022, an idea to reflag Toledo was brought forward by Jacob Parr, a multidisciplinary designer and lifelong Toledoan, who demonstrated a passion for improving the city's identity through years of research and community engagement; and
WHEREAS, in 2024, the Mayor announced a contest to advance this effort by inviting greater community participation and collaboration; and
WHEREAS, after a seven-month process led by the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, which included 68 eligible submissions and hundreds of public comments, a design review board made up of a diverse group of community members and artists have selected a new flag to represent Toledo in honor of the city's 188th birthday; and
WHEREAS, this opportunity to update an important symbol of Toledo serves as a reflection of the billions of dollars invested in the city over the past several years and aligns with Toledo's forward momentum, vibrant community, and rich history; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting for the City of Toledo to adopt a new flag to recognize Toledo's unwavering, indomitable spirit while celebrating the intersection of the city's proud history and promising future.
NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That the City of Toledo officially adopts the new City of Toledo flag as recommended by the design review board; residents are encouraged to adopt the flag and fly it proudly at their home or place of business.
