SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:
The Division of Water Reclamation (Division) standardizes with Allen Bradley variable frequency drives (VFDs) and electrical soft starters to control critical mechanical equipment. VFDs are used to vary and control the speed of pumps, compressors, blowers, etc. without causing any interruptions to the operation, whereas soft starters are used to reduce the electrical inrush current when starting mechanical equipment to avoid overloading electrical systems. The Division has been reliably using Allen Bradley VFDs and soft starters at the Bay View Water Reclamation Plant and the major pump stations for over 20 years. The Division did install VFDs and soft starters built by other companies, but was not successful due to electrical and control problems and lack of technical support. VFDs and soft starters normally have a service life of 20 years. With proper preventive maintenance, service life can be extended by another 5 to 10 years, which saves the Division a great deal of money and provides a reliable and uninterruptable operation.
