Recognizing the 25th Anniversary of the Toledo Crisis Intervention Team
Summary
WHEREAS, the concept of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) began in the city of Memphis, TN in 1987 with a program that trains police officers on how to deal with the mentally disturbed with the understanding that many that are criminally involved need help and not a jail cell; and
WHEREAS, by 2001 the Toledo Police Department organized its Crisis Intervention Team and modeled it after the one in Memphis, and the department works with the Lucas County Mental Health Board, Lucas County Family Council, the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Toledo, and the Mental Health Provider Network; and
WHEREAS, the Police Department, especially field operations, comes into contact with mentally ill people in day-to-day activities and it’s important to interact with these people to be a liaison; and
WHEREAS, training includes working with mental health professionals, mentally ill people (not in crisis) and the relatives of the mentally disturbed, and officers learn how to communicate with the mentally ill and those who are disturbed and have other problems, such as drug and alcohol addictions.
NOW THEREFORE, Be it resolved that:
SECTION 1. The work of the Crisis Intervention Team is hereby recognized on the occasion of its 25th Anniversary!
