SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:
The Ohio Bureau of Worker's Compensation Division of Safety and Hygiene awarded the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department (TFRD) a grant to purchase (3) LUCAS 3 Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Devices to enhance cardiac arrest patient care. Accordingly, these devices improve care by automating chest compression delivery at a depth, rhythm, rate, and quality proven superior to manual CPR, which also releases a first responder from such interventions to focus on alternate patient care aspects that collectively significantly increase return of spontaneous circulation success rates and patient survivability.

Currently, LUCAS devices are available on Lucas County LifeSquads, which due to limited unit availability compared to TFRD apparatuses, are often last to make patient contact, resulting in delayed device deployment. Whereby this grant and request approval, the devices will be placed on TFRD apparatuses to alleviate related service area deployment delays and enhance critical-care delivery during cardiac arrest events.
