Recognizing Ability Center’s 100th Anniversary and ADA 30th Anniversary.
Summary
WHEREAS, The Ability Center of Greater Toledo has been at the forefront of support and advocacy for over 100 years for people with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, throughout the first century of the Ability Center the mission has evolved from a hospital to support children affected by polio to its current mission of progressing Toledo to be one of the most disability friendly cities in the country; and
WHEREAS, the passage of the American’s with Disabilities’ Act of 1990 was a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability; and
WHEREAS, once the American’s with Disability Act of 1990 was passed the Ability Center of Greater Toledo again adjusted its’ focus to serve seven counties with programming aimed to create greater independence and connection to community; and
WHEREAS, with the continued work of the Ability Center as advocates for inclusion, all residents of Toledo have an opportunity to live a better and more independent life; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That Toledo City Council does hereby recognize the continued work and advocacy for the disability community in the City and surrounding areas.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
