Declaring the City of Toledo's Commitment to a Veteran Friendly Business Enterprise Program for Contractors, Subcontractors and Suppliers Participating in City Contracts; and declaring an emergency.
Summary
WHEREAS, based on the most recent Census data, there are more than 13,000 veterans residing in Toledo and more than 1,400 veteran-owned businesses operating in Toledo; and
WHEREAS, the Toledo region has a long history of supporting the military and its veterans; and
WHEREAS, Veteran Friendly Business Enterprise programs benefit veterans by rewarding them for their sacrifice of military service; helping to ease the transition from military service to civilian life; and developing new, local employment opportunities for veterans; and
WHEREAS, Veteran Friendly Business Enterprise programs are beneficial to the local community and the municipalities implementing these programs by encouraging the establishment of new businesses and increasing business tax revenue, providing new growth opportunities for existing businesses, promoting job creation, and attracting loyal and well-disciplined people to government contracting opportunities; and
WHEREAS, it is hereby the policy of the City of Toledo that Veteran Friendly Business Enterprises shall have the maximum practical opportunity to participate in the performance of contracts that are City-funded or include City of Toledo tax incentives; and
WHEREAS, the City of Toledo currently offers Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification and a goal-oriented program established to strengthen the participation of MBE contractors, subcontractors and suppliers in City contracts via Toledo Municipal Code, and City Council desires to implement a similar program to benefit Veteran Friendly Business Enterprises; NOW, THEREFORE,
