Summary
SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:

WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Jay Coats is a native of Toledo, Ohio, and an Army Combat veteran who is retiring after 22 years of service (December 2001- January 2024); and

WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Coats is a 1995 graduate of Central Catholic High School; is a first-generation college graduate attending the University of Toledo where he earned his bachelor's degree and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program; is a Life Member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated and a Prince Hall Free and Accepted Mason; and

WHEREAS, before departing Toledo to serve our country, Lt. Col. Coats was very active in his church and various community service activities; he would volunteer his time playing the drums and serving as a youth group bible study teacher at End-Time Christian Fellowship; he also was a Big Brother mentor for Big Brothers and Sisters of Northwest Ohio and volunteered as an after-school tutor and Assistant Flag Football Coach for Grace Community Center in Toledo, Ohio; and

WHEREAS, during Lt. Col. Coat's Army career, he specialized in Air Defense Artillery and Defense Acquisitions. Lt. Col. Coat's 22 years of service include two combat tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as multiple leadership and nominative roles at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels during his Army career; and

WHEREAS, his awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and a Presidential Unit Citation;


NOW THEREFORE, Be it resolved that:

SECTION 1. That Lt. Colonial Jay C. Coats is recognized for his 22 years of exemplary service to his nation in the United States Army and is congratulated upon his retiremen...
