Recognizing Powell’s Beauty & Barber Supply.
Summary
WHEREAS, Robert M. Powell, Sr. was born in 1917 in Drew, Mississippi, and after high school and working as a Pullman Porter, Mr. Powell, in 1946, relocated to Toledo to become employed for the Doehler-Jarvis Corporation; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Powell’s brother was a barber and during that time could not buy African American hair-care products in Toledo. The Powell brothers would acquire their supplies from Detroit and Ann Arbor. Then, with $275, Mr. Powell purchased wholesale hair products that were sold from the trunk of his Ford to licensed professional beauticians and barbers in Toledo; and
WHEREAS, eventually Mr. Powell’s endeavor to bring quality hair care products to the Toledo community lead him to open a storefront and “Powell’s Beauty & Barber Supply” was established at 901 Nebraska Ave.; and
WHEREAS, Powell’s Beauty & Barber Supply continues to be a fourth generation, family-owned and operated business that serves the community as well as beauty salons, barber shops and educational centers. Powell’s also provides delivery services to the community and invites other various small business owners to sell product in their store creating greater opportunity for all; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That this Council does hereby recognize the contributions and legacy of Powell’s Beauty & Barber Supply and they are wished continued success in providing quality products to the Toledo community for years to come.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
