Commemorating Fifty Years of Remembrance and Honoring the Legacy of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald.

Summary
WHEREAS, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, one of the largest and most iconic freighters ever to sail the Great Lakes, tragically sank on November 10, 1975, in a fierce storm on Lake Superior, taking the lives of all 29 crew members aboard; and

WHEREAS, the ship, often nicknamed the "Toledo Express," was deeply connected to our city through its many voyages to Toledo. Its captain, Ernest M. McSorley, was a Toledo resident, with many of the crew members hailing from northwest Ohio, thus making the tragedy a personal loss for our community; and

WHEREAS, the mysterious sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald has captivated the attention of the nation and the world for five decades, memorialized in song, story, and scholarship, and continues to stand as one of the most haunting maritime disasters in Great Lakes history; and

WHEREAS, the National Museum of the Great Lakes, located on the banks of the Maumee River in Toledo, is dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of the Great Lakes, and serves as a steward of the Edmund Fitzgerald's legacy through artifacts on display, educational exhibits, and programs that commemorate the ship, its crew, and the tragedy's lasting impact; and

WHEREAS, the museum is leading remembrance efforts during this solemn 50th anniversary, ensuring that the memory of the Edmund Fitzgerald and its crew continues to be preserved for future generations, while also highlighting the enduring connection between Toledo, the Great Lakes, and this historic event.


NOW THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
