Title
Declaring September 25 as National Day of Remembrance for Murdered Victims.
Summary
WHEREAS, in 2022, there were 438 murders in Ohio; 63 of them happened in our city, Toledo; and
WHEREAS, in S. Res. 237, Congress designated September 25th of each year National Day of Remembrance for Murdered Victims, allowing families and organizations to honor and remember their loved ones that are victims of murder; and
WHEREAS, many organizations, including the Northwest Ohio Parents of Murdered Children and Sisters 4 Unity, will, have or are hosting ceremonies to come together in solidarity to help with healing; and
WHEREAS, Northwest Ohio Parents of Murdered Children is a chapter of the National Organization of Parents of Murdered Children founded in 1978, by Robert and Charlotte Hullinger of Cincinnati, Ohio, after the murder of their daughter; and
WHEREAS, Northwest Ohio Parents of Murdered Children Chapter's Leader, is also the Co-Founder of Sisters 4 Unity, Toledo, Ohio; Sisters 4 Unity began in December 2022, when Toledo area mothers joined in unity after they each suffered their own loss when their sons became victims of gun violence; and
WHEREAS, cities across the nation, including Toledo, are working diligently to end violence; today, we stand in solidarity with Parents of Murdered Children, Sisters 4 Unity and all other individuals and organizations who stand together; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That we hereby declare September 25th, from this day forward, as "National Day of Remembrance for Murdered Victims" in Toledo, Ohio.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
