Celebrating and Recognizing the 100th Running of the Mills Trophy Race hosted by the Toledo Yacht Club

Summary
SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:
WHEREAS, the Toledo Yacht Club is hosting the 100th Running of the Mills Trophy Race June 7-9, 2024; In conjunction with the Storm Trysail Club, and the Mills Trophy Race Committee; and

WHEREAS, Toledo Yacht Club (TYC) was organized (per the Constitution) for "the promotion and elevation of yachting and the development and cultivation of social attainments among its members"; in other words, is a boating and social club, one of the oldest clubs in North America, founded in Toledo, Ohio, in 1865; and incorporated in Ohio on October 3, 1885; and

WHEREAS, the first Mills Trophy Race was held in 1907 on the waters of Western Lake Erie; and Commodore Merrill B. Mills of Detroit donated the Sterling silver punchbowl trophy to TYC in 1907 to encourage holding the race after the club had suffered the complete destruction of the clubhouse by fire; and

WHEREAS, the Toledo Yacht Club has continued to sponsor this race since that time, with few exceptions due to war, depression, an order from the US Coast Guard to stand down due to weather, and Covid; and

WHEREAS, since 1981, The Invitational Mills Trophy Race has been held with the support of the Storm Trysail Club of Larchmont New York, and sailed on three courses (Mills, President's, Governor's) starting near the Toledo Harbor light, and finishing at Put-in-Bay, South Bass Island, Ohio; and

WHEREAS, the 100th running of the Mills Trophy Race will bring nearly 150 racing sailboats and well over 1,000 crew to Toledo, Ohio to participate in this milestone event; and to enjoy the hospitality of the historic Toledo Yacht Club;

NOW, THEREFORE, Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo, Ohio (the Council):
