Recognizing and Honoring the Toledo Troopers
Summary
WHEREAS, the Toledo Troopers hold a distinguished place in professional football history and were recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame in March 2019 as the "winningest teams in professional football history," proudly representing the City of Toledo while inspiring generations of athletes through their excellence, determination, and enduring legacy; and
WHEREAS, founded in 1971, the Toledo Troopers established a legacy of excellence by compiling an extraordinary record and capturing seven world titles, between 1971-1977, becoming a pioneering force in women's professional football and earning national recognition for their achievements on the field; and
WHEREAS, the Toledo Troopers were a remarkable and diverse team comprised of housewives, factory workers, hairdressers, teachers, former nuns, bartenders, mail carriers, pilots, and women from many different backgrounds and walks of life. As mothers, daughters, aunts, sisters, and trailblazers of every race and ethnicity, they shattered barriers and expanded opportunities for women in sports during a time when such opportunities were limited, proving that determination, teamwork, and athletic excellence transcend gender; and
WHEREAS, the accomplishments of the Toledo Troopers helped pave the way for future generations of female athletes, contributing to the growth and advancement of women's sports throughout the nation; and the legacy of the Toledo Troopers continues to be a source of pride for the City of Toledo, reflecting the resilience, spirit, and determination that define our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TOLEDO:
