SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:
WHEREAS, Lee Liddell Sr. was born on December 24 of 1924, after serving in the United States Army Air forces during the World War II, as part of the historic Tuskegee Airmen Program. He was led to establish the Liddell's Barbershop in the 1950's on property located near the intersection of Indiana Ave. and Junction; and
WHEREAS, since its establishment in 1950's, Liddell's barbershop under the leadership of Lee Liddell Sr for over 46 years and subsequently under the leadership of his nephew Vernon. Served the community well. It was one of the first African -American owned barbershops in Toledo, has been a place to find spiritual nourishment, and has provided a source of Community gathering place and
WHEREAS, because Lee had been such a mentor and providing haircuts to fathers, sone, and grandsons through the years, he offered free haircuts for school age children to families in need. , providing a pillar for our community over the course of the last several decades,
WHEREAS, He received the award of "Father of the Year" in recognition of his role as a family and community leader. He was also a member of Third Baptist Church , serving on the Men's Council and the senior usher board. He loved to travel, including Zambia on his list of destinations, he also traveled in 1963 to hear Martin Luther King Jr. speak at the march in Washington.
WHEREAS, it is most fitting to rename the corner of Indiana and Junction Lee & Vernon Liddell Way. in their honor whereby he will rightfully remain a part of Toledo's rich history.
NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That the City of Toledo hereby dedicates the corner of Indiana and Junction as Lee & Vernon Liddell Way in recognition of their active leadership and community service.
