SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:
The University of Cincinnati is pleased to announce that the Toledo Police Department has been awarded funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) through the University of Cincinnati under grant number DA049417 (CFDA# 93.279). This funding will be used to support the "Leave Behind" initiative.
Toledo Police frequently respond to 911 calls for opioid overdose or other conditions affecting people who suffer from opioid use disorder. In many cases these individuals are not transported to a hospital, but would still benefit from receiving Naloxone. TPD will work with the Toledo/Lucas County Health Department to operationalize and implement procedures to "leave behind" Naloxone with at-risk individuals, particularly if they are not transported to an emergency department for further care.
In addition, the initiative will work on streamlining the required data collection for this project and linking this with other programs to assist with accurate and timely reporting of overdose information and Naloxone distribution.
The funds will be used to purchase Naloxone or other supplies and equipment that will directly be used to support the "Leave Behind" initiative.
