Recognizing Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur for being the longest serving woman in the history of Congress.

 

Summary

WHEREAS, Congresswoman Kaptur is a native Toledoan still living in the same house she grew up in; is proud of her working-class roots and her strong female representation from her family and her education at St. Ursula Academy; and

 

WHEREAS, Congresswoman Kaptur was the first member of her family to attend college and obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from the University of Michigan, all when female representation was not prevalent; and

 

WHEREAS, Congresswoman Kaptur entered the workforce as a City Planner in Toledo and Chicago for 15 years, including an appointment as a domestic policy advisor to President Jimmy Carter where she guided 17 housing and neighborhood revitalization bills through Congress; and

 

WHEREAS, Congresswoman Kaptur was furthering her education pursing a Doctorate in Urban Planning and Finance Development at MIT when she was recruited to run for Congress; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1982, she was elected and she has continued to fight hard and represent the 9th Congressional District; earned a seat on the powerful Appropriations Committee and was the first woman to serve as Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water where she is now seated as Ranking Member; and

 

WHEREAS, Congresswoman Kaptur has an extensive list of successes; some of her favorites in this area are the I-280 Veterans Glass City Skyway, largest bridge project in Ohio History, funding Toledo’s Farmers Market, and state of the art solar array for the 180th Fighter Wing; and

 

WHEREAS, Congresswoman Kaptur is especially proud of her relentless dedication to Veterans and Seniors; she persevered for 17 years to have the World War II memorial built in Washington D.C.  On May 29, 2004 Congresswoman Kaptur was recognized for her tenacity before over 150,000 people, three Presidents and many veteran heroes, at the formal dedication of the Monument by President George W. Bush; and

 

WHEREAS, she fights for long list of causes which include keeping the 180th Fighter Wing open, funding for PTSD for veterans, building a new VA Clinic in her hometown, as well as, most recently, the PACT Act; and

 

WHEREAS, Congresswoman Kaptur is now considered the longest serving woman in Congress and should be honored and recognized for her commitment to the American people and her exemplification of the importance of the role of women in leadership and public service; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

                     SECTION 1.  That Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur is honored and recognized for her selfless commitment as a public servant to the citizens of Toledo and the 9th District of Ohio and her many contributions as Congresswoman.

 

                     SECTION 2.  That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
