Expressing Support for Home Matters to Ohio Platform

 

Summary

SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:

WHEREAS, “Home Matters to Ohio” is a coalition of affordable housing advocates and business and industry leaders who share the common goal of facilitating the development and preservation of a range of housing options that will positively impact housing along with the continuum from homelessness to market rate housing; and

 

WHEREAS, ten organizations, including the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (COHHIO), came together to create the “Home Matter to Ohio” Platform and nearly 70 organizations throughout Ohio have signed on in support; and

 

WHEREAS, “Home Matters to Ohio: A Plan for Housing in Ohio” is a platform of state policy priorities that are realistic, well-researched and data-driven and intended to help ensure Ohioans have a safe, decent and affordable place to call home; and

 

WHEREAS, the “Home Matters to Ohio” Platform objective concludes that the State of Ohio should support and provide incentives to increase the supply of housing in the state; and

 

WHEREAS, Toledo City Council joins in the Home Matters to Ohio call to action including to safeguard the future of the Ohio Housing Trust Fund, enact a Housing Infrastructure Program, and provide financial and technical assistance to local governments to correct outdated zoning codes; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Toledo was recently awarded a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through its Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing (PRO Housing) program in partnership with the Lucas County Land Bank and the Toledo-Lucas County Plan Commissions; and

 

WHEREAS, this historic funding will help the city address critical barriers to housing production, advance innovative housing strategies, and make significant investments in affordable housing infrastructure through modernizing our zoning and development standards, streamlining permitting processes, and incentivizing affordable housing in targeted neighborhoods.

 

NOW THEREFORE, Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo that:

 

SECTION 1. Toledo City Council expresses its support for the “Home Matters to Ohio: A Plan for Housing in Ohio” Platform and invites other Ohio municipalities to join in the call for housing reform.

 

SECTION 2. Toledo City Council calls on the State of Ohio to adopt the “Home Matters to Ohio” Platform and focus on providing affordable housing and zoning rewrite support to municipalities to uplift residents in Toledo, Ohio and around the state now and into the future.

 

SECTION 3. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
