Title

Recognizing April as Fair Housing Month, and the work of The Fair Housing Center in furthering the goals of the Fair Housing Act.

Summary

SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:

The month of April is nationally recognized as “Fair Housing Month”, which honors the passage of the Fair Housing Act on April 11, 1968, just one week after the assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in every aspect of a housing transaction and ensures that everyone has the right to live in vibrant and diverse neighborhoods of their choice.

The City of Toledo, in recognizing Fair Housing Month, wishes to formally acknowledge the importance of fair housing, including the elimination of housing discrimination, the promotion of housing choice, and the creation of inclusive communities of opportunity.

Within the City of Toledo, and throughout Lucas and Wood Counties, The Fair Housing Center is dedicated to furthering the goals of the Fair Housing Act. The Center provides advocacy for anti-discriminatory housing policies, education and outreach on fair housing, and assistance to victims of housing discrimination with investigation and legal enforcement of their rights.

The Fair Housing Center also assists the City of Toledo by preparing its Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice (AI) and related Action Plan. The AI and Action Plan are required by federal law to guide cities, including Toledo, in addressing barriers to fair housing choice. Important elements of the current AI and Action Plan include making more affordable housing choices available to residents integrated throughout Toledo, encouraging developers to increase accessibility, improving policies and practices to ensure access to housing that is safe, healthy, and habitable, preventing childhood lead poising, and ending discrimination based on source of income.  NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1. That the City of Toledo recognizes April as Fair Housing Month and honors the passage of the Fair Housing Act.

SECTION 2. That The Fair Housing Center and its dedicated team are hereby commended for their contributions to the community in furtherance of the goals of the Fair Housing Act.

SECTION 3. That the City of Toledo remains committed to affirmatively furthering the goals of the Fair Housing Act. The City resolves to continue to make progress toward addressing impediments to fair housing as identified in the City of Toledo’s Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice and its Action Plan.

SECTION 4. That this Resolution shall take effect at the earliest date allowed by law.
