Recognizing and congratulating the 2023 Kid Mayor and Council and extending the Council’s best wishes in their future endeavors
Summary
SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:
WHEREAS, Kid Mayor and Council started in 2022, this is the second cohort. The program was created as a way for fourth graders in Toledo Public and Washington Local Schools to represent their schools and community while learning about local government.
WHEREAS, the students were picked from hundreds of applicants after answering the question “If I were Mayor of Toledo I would…”. Toledo Public and Washington Local then selected thirteen students-seven from TPS and six from WLS to move onto the interview portion; and
WHEREAS, during the interview, the Mayor, Superintendents and other prominent members of Toledo asked the students questions about their vision for the City, their dreams for the future, and what they like to do for fun; and then the panel then voted to select Gabby Mukiira as the 2023 Kid Mayor while the remaining 12 served as Kid Councilmembers; and
WHEREAS, the program allowed the students to learn about the functions of local government by allowing them to tour the Water Treatment Plant, Engage Toledo, learn about public-private partnerships at a Mudhens Game, and tour Firehouse 6 while also learning about the Toledo Police Department; and
WHEREAS, at the end of their term, the Mayor and Councilmembers had the chance to speak with Diversity, Equity Accessibility and Inclusion representatives at an interactive event held at the Main Library. during which the students had in-depth discussions with Toledo City Councilmembers, Interrupters from the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, and representatives from their school administrations; thereafter, the conversations led the students to develop goals for their community and schools, which will be presented today; and
WHEREAS, the program also allowed the students to represent their schools and neighborhoods during live press conferences and activities throughout the City including a Kindness Event planned and executed by the Kid Mayor and Kid Councilmembers; and
WHEREAS, Gabrielle Mukiira from Grove Patterson Elementary in TPS was named the 2023 Kid Mayor; and
WHEREAS, the following students served as Kid Councilmembers:

NOW THEREFORE, Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo, Ohio (the Council):
SECTION 1. That the 2023 Kid Mayor and Council are recognized and congratulated and extended the Council’s best wishes in their future endeavors.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
