Recognizing and congratulating Matthew A. Cherry, President of Council, on the occasion of his retirement from Toledo City Council.

 

Summary

SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:

 

WHEREAS, Matt Cherry was first appointed to Toledo City Council in 2014 to replace D. Michael Collins as the representative for District 2, and was elected and re-elected in 2014, 2015 and 2019; and

 

WHEREAS, Matt has served the past six years as President of Council, being first chosen in 2018; and

 

WHEREAS, Matt has a unique ability to work behind the scenes to bring people together on any issue for the betterment of the community; he has always been able to put political barriers aside and work with all members of Council, the Administration and Mayors, regardless of political party; and

 

WHEREAS, Matt has served on countless committees over the years, including, Education, Recreation and Employment; Neighborhoods and Community Development; Regional Growth, Development and Small Business Enterprise; Water Quality and Sustainability; Streets, Public Services and Utilities; serving as Chair on Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform, City Council Advancement and Accountability, Committee of the Whole, and Zoning and Planning, where he will go down in history for conducting the shortest meeting, lasting under ten minutes; and

 

WHEREAS, Matt has worked hard for many projects; some of his most memorable being the Dave Beckwith Memorial (Marengo Street) Bridge, redevelopment of Southwyck to an Amazon hub, the Glass City Dog Park, and the shining star currently known as Schneider Soccer Complex; and

 

WHEREAS, Matt Cherry will also be known for his dedication to the Union, and his willingness to help anyone in need; neighbors, co-workers, family, you name it; and

 

WHEREAS, President Cherry will not be bored for long; may he enjoy his newly acquired spare time with his wife, Nicole, his two sons, MJ and Isaac; at his favorite pastimes attending Walleye games, Mud Hens games and Toledo Celtics soccer matches, and

 

WHEREAS, Matt, in his free time, may even travel more to go fishing in Florida, attend an Ohio State Buckeyes game at the Shoe, or a Minnesota Vikings game; and

 

WHEREAS, he will surely continue to cook and smoke some fantastic meals and find a cold beer (AKA Melt My Brain--with a fireball chaser); and

 

WHEREAS, Matt’s knowledge, experience and guidance will be sorely missed by his fellow members of Council and the staff;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

 

                      SECTION 1. That the Council, on behalf of his constituents and all of Toledo’s citizens, does hereby express their gratitude to Council President Matt Cherry for his years of dedicated service to the City of Toledo and recognize his leadership, compassion, kindness, countless achievements and contributions to public service, and that he is wished success, relaxation and good health in the future.

 

                     SECTION 2.  That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
