Recognizing James A. Bennett.

 

Summary

WHEREAS, in 1977, James A. Bennett purchased Colony Hardware located on Central Avenue in the old Colony district; later moving it to 4108 Monroe Street; and

 

WHEREAS, after being transferred across the country several times, he left a 13-year job in electronics with Owens-Illinois to find a more stable environment for his family; and

 

WHERAS, Bennett Colony Hardware was the place to go if you needed a thingamajig to fasten your whatchamacallit, chances were they had it in stock; Jim always knew what you needed and where it was located; and

 

WHEREAS, Jim watched as other small hardware’s closed their doors due to large chain stores coming to the neighborhood; however, customers returned to Bennett Hardware due to the personal service, as well as the warm and natural atmosphere; and

 

WHEREAS, Bennett Colony Hardware operated with a total of seven employee, with only two full-time; Jim kept the store open seven days a week, working up to 70 hours a week himself; and

 

WHEREAS, Jim always said that one of his greatest joys was hiring high school kids to work part-time; he adored watching them mature in responsibility and personal growth; and

 

WHEREAS, Jim gave his high school employees every opportunity to learn through hands on experience and take fatherly pride in their life accomplishments; and

 

WHEREAS, a lucky man who ignores his years and loved his work; Jim decided it was time to close the doors to Bennett Colony Hardware for good, in September of 2021; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

 

SECTION 1.  That Toledo City Council recognize James A. Bennett for his years of hard work and dedication, in which he provided to the city of Toledo and his family.

 

                     SECTION 2.  That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
