Title

Recognizing April as Fair Housing Month, and the work of The Fair Housing Center in furthering the goals of the Fair Housing Act

Summary

SUMMARY & BACKGROUND:

The month of April is recognized as “Fair Housing Month”, which honors the passage of the Fair Housing Act that serves the City of Toledo and the nation through assistance in ensuring equal access to housing to all members in the community pursuing the American Dream.

The City of Toledo, in recognizing Fair Housing Month, wishes formally acknowledge the importance of fair housing, including the elimination of housing discrimination, the promotion of housing choice, and the creation of inclusive communities of opportunity.

Within the City of Toledo, and throughout Lucas and Wood Counties, The Fair Housing Center is dedicated to furthering the goals of the Fair Housing Act. The Center provides advocacy for anti-discriminatory housing policies, education and outreach on fair housing, and assistance to victims of housing discrimination with investigation and legal enforcement of their rights.

The Fair Housing Center also assists the City of Toledo by preparing its Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice (AI) and related Action Plan. The AI and Action Plan are required by federal law to guide the cities, including Toledo, in addressing barriers to fair housing choice. Important elements of the current AI and Action Plan include making more affordable housing choices available to residents integrated throughout Toledo, encouraging developers to increase accessibility, improve policies and practices to ensure access to housing that is safe, healthy, and habitable, ending childhood lead poising, and ending discrimination based on source of income.

NOW THEREFORE, Be it resolved that:

SECTION 1. That the City of Toledo recognizes April as Fair Housing Month and honors the passage of the Fair Housing Act.

SECTION 2. That The Fair Housing Center and its dedicated team are hereby commended for their contributions to the community in furtherance of the goals of the Fair Housing Act.

SECTION 3. That the City of Toledo remains committed to affirmatively furthering the goals of the Fair Housing Act. The City resolves to continue to make progress toward addressing impediments to fair housing as identified in the City of Toledo’s Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice and its Action Plan.

SECTION 4. That this Resolution shall take effect at the earliest date allowed by law.
