Dedicating the corner of Escott Avenue at May Avenue “Gregory Wojciechowski ‘Wojo’ Way”, and declaring an emergency.
Summary
WHEREAS, Gregory M. Wojciechowski was born in West Toledo in 1951; at a very young age, he started weightlifting and strength training, learning wrestling skills at Torio’s Gym; and
WHEREAS, in 1967 and 1968, undefeated, Wojo won back-to-back heavyweight State wrestling championships for Whitmer High School; from 1969-1972 he wrestled for the University of Toledo, becoming the 1971 NCAA National Champion. After college, he became the AAU Heavyweight Championship four times, winning a total of 13 national titles. Wojo made the 1980 Olympic wrestling team but was unable to compete due to a U.S. boycott of those games, later serving as an alternate in 1984 and 1988; in 1980 he entered professional wrestling as the “Great Wojo” winning WWA heavyweight championships in 1978, 1985 and 1987; and
WHEREAS, beyond wrestling, Wojo was a devoted family man and served the City of Toledo for many years as a mentor to troubled and disenfranchised youth; as a teacher and wrestling coach for more than 30 years at Libby High School, his humble, down-to-earth and caring nature encouraged the trust necessary to provide his valuable mentorship; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Honor met on September 17, 2026 and unanimously recommended that Escott Avenue at the corner of May Avenue be dedicated as “Gregory Wojciechowski ‘Wojo’ Way” in order to properly recognize and celebrate his many accomplishments, life and legacy.
NOW THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That the City of Toledo hereby recognizes the honorary dedication of Escott Avenue at the corner of May Avenue at “Gregory Wojciechowski ‘Wojo’ Way.”
SECTION 2. It is hereby found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning and relating to the passage of this Resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council and that all deliberations of this Council and its committees that resulted in such formal actions, were in meetings open to the public, in compliance with all legal requirements including Section 121.22 of the Revised Code of Ohio and that the reading and adoption of this Resolution complies with the provisions of the City Charter, as amended.
SECTION 3. That this Resolution hereby is declared to be an emergency measure and shall be in force and effect from and after its adoption. The reason for the emergency lies in the fact that same is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, safety and property of the City.
