Title

Recognizing the 35th Annual World AIDS Day.

Summary

WHEREAS, World AIDS Day, designated on December 1st of each year since 1988, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who’ve died of the disease; and

WHEREAS, World AIDS Day is observed by all 193 United Nations Member States which together comprise the largest intergovernmental organization in the world, all with equal representation under the UN General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, this year on December 1st, the National Institute of Health (NIH) commemorates the 35th World AIDS Day with relative remarks from The White House along with a panel of experts that continue to explore ways to ensure that no community is left behind as we work to end the global pandemic; and

WHEREAS, under the theme “Let Communities Lead”, networks of people from key populations affected by HIV, along with youth leaders, continue to be essential for progress in the HIV response; and

WHEREAS, in addition to wearing a red ribbon, fundraising for National AIDS Trust and spreading awareness of issues affecting people living with HIV are just some of the ways to get involved with World AIDS Day and more ideas for participation can be found at WorldAIDSDay.org; NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1. That World AIDS Day is recognized as more than a celebration of the achievement of communities, but it is also a call to action to enable and support communities like Toledo in their leadership roles, and it is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in raising awareness about the challenges that remain in our collective pursuit toward the eradication of the virus that causes AIDS

SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.

Adopted:  December 5, 2023, as an emergency measure:  yeas 10, nays 0.
