Title

Officially naming the ball diamond at the City park, Sleepy Hollow, located at 4150-4198 Overlook Boulevard to be known as “Jan Scotland Memorial Ball Field”.

 

Summary

WHEREAS, Jan Scotland a one-time Toledo city councilman and a business owner in the Dorr Street corridor is an honored staple in the Sleepy Hollow Park neighborhood; as a former volunteer for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and a board member and board president of both the East Toledo Family Center and Frederick Douglass Community Association, he had always advocated for youth; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1996, Jan Scotland founded the Sleepy Hollow Athletic League which he coached for a faithful 27 years; the Sleepy Hollow Athletic League was started after a young man was shot and killed in a “wrong place at the wrong time” incident in a parking lot, where around 300 youth were in attendance; and

 

WHEREAS, Jan wanted a safe place for youth to go, be invested, experience positive actions and simply, just have something to do; and

 

WHEREAS, the Sleepy Hollow Athletic League celebrated its first summer with 40 youth registered to play t-ball; in 2004, when Jan received the Jefferson Award, there were more than 700 kids ages 5 to 18 who played t-ball, baseball, basketball, flag football, golf, and tennis throughout the year; and

 

WHEREAS, the Sleepy Hollow Athletic League was a co-ed program which taught the city’s youth the fundamentals of sports, encouraging good sportsmanlike conduct rather than competition; the unique program was affordable for all and completely ran by volunteers and parents; and

 

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the City of Toledo memorializes Jan Scotland by naming the Sleepy Hollow Park ball field in his honor; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

 

SECTION 1.  That as a tribute to and in memory of Jan Scotland’s commitment to the youth of City of Toledo, the Council of the City of Toledo does hereby officially name the ball field at Sleepy Hollow, located at 4150-4198 Overlook Boulevard, to be known as “Jan Scotland Memorial Ball Field”.

 

SECTION 2.                     That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
