Celebrate the Malczewski family and their legacy that will forever live on.

 

Summary

WHEREAS, in 1912, Polish immigrant Stanley Malczewski opened a grocery store, Malczewski’s Market, on Buckingham and Pulaski; little did he know, this would be the start of a family legacy; and

 

WHEREAS, Malczewski's Market specialized in homemade kielbasa, pierogi, coffee cakes, and other Polish specialties; the family is proud that the sausage was made with hand-peeled garlic and an old hand-crank sausage maker; and

 

WHEREAS, in the 1950s Stanley’s son, Ray and his wife, Bernadine, began to operate the store; in 1967, Ray and Bernadine opened the Scott Park Banquet Room and began a catering business called Malczewski’s Catering; and

 

WHEREAS, in July, 2002, at 77 years old, Ray and Bernadine hung up their aprons for good; however, the legacy of the Malczewski family continued with their son, Fred and his sister, Karen; and

 

WHEREAS, the Malczewski children worked at the market with Mom and Dad from an early age; Fred and his sister Karen continued to work in the store as adults, their sister Sue helped out during holidays, as did Norm Malczewski, another son of the founders; and

 

WHEREAS, Fred and Karen provided the same delicious Polish specialties and hospitalities at the catering business for over 50 years until retirement in 2022, when they closed the doors for good; and

 

WHEREAS, although Malczewski Catering came to an end, longtime customers will still be able to get some favorites from the Malczewski Seasonings online store; and

 

WHEREAS, memories and stories of past Christmas’, when customers returned to keep the Malczewski’s busy cranking out six tons of kielbasa with a recipe handed down from the founder and his wife, Mary; customers shipping meats to loved ones across the United States and traveling home with kielbasa as far as Texas, will last forever; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

                     SECTION 1.  That Toledo City Council recognizes and celebrates the Malczewski family and their legacy that will forever live on.

 

SECTION 2.  That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
