Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and Honoring the Courage, Sacrifice, and Enduring Legacy of the Hungarian Freedom Fighters

Summary

WHEREAS, October 23, 2026, marks the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, a historic uprising in which the Hungarian people courageously rose against communist dictatorship and Soviet domination in pursuit of freedom, democracy, and national independence; and

WHEREAS, the revolution began with peaceful demonstrations led by students and joined by thousands of Hungarian citizens demanding democratic reforms, civil liberties, and the withdrawal of Soviet troops from their homeland; and

WHEREAS, the Hungarian freedom fighters and citizens who stood against oppression demonstrated extraordinary courage and determination, enduring violence, imprisonment, persecution, and death in their struggle to secure liberty for their nation; and

WHEREAS, although the revolution was suppressed by Soviet military forces in November 1956, the bravery and sacrifice of the Hungarian people inspired generations around the world and helped preserve the enduring hope for freedom and democracy that would ultimately contribute to Hungary's transition to independence in 1989; and

WHEREAS, in the aftermath of the revolution, approximately 200,000 Hungarians fled their homeland, seeking refuge and a new beginning in other countries, including the United States, where Hungarian immigrants enriched their communities through their traditions, resilience, talents, and contributions to civic, cultural, and economic life; and

WHEREAS, the City of Toledo recognizes the importance of preserving the history of the Hungarian Revolution, honoring those who sacrificed their lives and freedom, and celebrating the Hungarian Americans whose heritage and contributions continue to strengthen our community; and

WHEREAS, the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution serves as a powerful reminder that the pursuit of freedom, human dignity, and self-determination transcends borders and generations, inspiring all people to stand against oppression and uphold the principles of liberty and justice.

NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1. That Council hereby commemorates the 70th Anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, honors the courage and sacrifice of the Hungarian freedom fighters, and recognizes the enduring contributions of Hungarian Americans to our community and nation; and

SECTION 2. That this Council encourages all Toledo residents to reflect upon the significance of this historic struggle and to reaffirm their commitment to freedom, democracy, and the universal dignity of all people.
