Celebrating the National Museum of the Great Lakes 10-year anniversary.

 

Summary

WHEREAS, in 1944, the Great Lakes Historical Society was formed in Cleveland, Ohio by a group of maritime enthusiasts; the Society’s continued mission is to preserve and make known the history of the Great Lakes; and 

 

WHEREAS, the Society first had a small museum located in Vermillion, Ohio; then in 2014, they moved operations to Toledo and opened a much larger museum, the National Museum of the Great Lakes, developed on the banks of the Maumee River; and

 

WHEREAS, the National Museum of Great Lakes offers visual, audio visual, hands on and artifacts that span over hundreds of years; the incredible tale of the Great Lakes, the most important natural resource in the world, provides vision into fur trading, the underground railroad, rum runners, and the many ships and sailors that traveled the lakes to provide goods and services; and

 

WHEREAS, two of the largest and most known exhibits at the museum are the Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship and the Museum Tug Ohio; the Col. James M. Schoonmaker “Queen of the Lakes” Museum Ship is an iron vessel over 617-foot-long and 64 feet wide; it first launched in 1911 as a coal hauler and sailed the great lakes for over 70 years; the acquired Museum, Tug Ohio, was donated in its retirement by the Great Lakes Towing Company; and

 

WHEREAS, in April 2024, the National Museum of Great Lakes will celebrate 10 years of educating and entertaining at Toledo’s National Museum of Great Lakes, the Great Lakes Historical Society is able to preserve and provide the Great Lakes historical facts.

 

 

NOW THEREFORE, Be it resolved that:

 

SECTION 1. That we celebrate the National Museum of Great Lakes 10-year anniversary.

SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
